Custom Cabinets, Shelves, Cases and Other Wooden Creations

Welcome to my site of custom-built wood creations. I will build items like this for you. This diverse collection includes cases, shelves, cabinets, stands, frames, doors and even beds. And they are all being used. None of these creations has been posed in a designer home; they are either shown installed or before being handed over to a family member. Some of those in use are dusty and a few even have cobwebs -- and you'll see how they look in a home with down-to-earth people responding to their own practical needs.

Cherry Floor Insert

Cherry Floor Insert For two reasons -- to set off the future kitchen island and to replace water-damaged and bent flooring -- the maple flooring was cut away. Wide cherry planks were available locally at discount because the original buyer did not pick them up. It was cut and bolted into place with brass bolts. The maple flooring was swapped around so that the floor could become flat again.
Cherry Floor Insert The floor insert has been given six coats, three sandings, and endless rubs with Stevie's Special Mix. The wood looks hand-rubbed for years. This is the widest board (15 inches) where the bar stools will sit near the wood stove.
Cherry Floor Insert Another view of the floor after finishing and rubbing. The item under construction is the green granite island raised up from the boards. When it is done, it will cover about two inches of the inner edge of cherry, and be movable.
Cherry Floor Insert The other side of the island has a narrower cherry board where it is nearer the cooking area. The neighboring maple flooring is nearly a century old, and will be sanded and refinished as well.
Cherry Floor Insert Looking down at the cherry. There are two kinds of brass fasteners: the phillips kind is on the perimeter; the yankee kind is at the butt edge of the wood (see two pix up for the butt-end bolts). They give it an old-fashioned look of different choices.
