Former Campers Win
John Balch Memorial Tournament 2006

Colchester was well represented at the 19th annual Vermont State chess championships, the John Balch Memorial Tournament, held on Saturday, April 8, 2006, at Camel's Hump Middle School in Richmond, Vermont.

Andrew Akiki of Colchester was the state fifth grade champion, going undefeated in five rounds.

Stephen Akiki and Nathan Hauke, in addition to winning individual awards, also were the Vermont state middle school team champions. Other teams had three or four members but the two of them alone accumulated more points than any other middle school team.

This tournament is named in honor of John Balch, great promoter of scholastic chess in Vermont. He was a teacher of hundreds of Vermont youth, including Andrew, Stephen and Nathan. All three players attend Mater Christi School in Burlington.
