Tanks.

By Samuel 'I fret for a living' Claiborne on Wednesday, August 15, 2001 - 09:41 am:

Dennis, please let me know ASAP on Trinity, as I've got a reservation @ comfort inn for 3 days, but would probably perfer sleeping w/my babies @ Trinity.

Any news on PA? Tom Heasley said he may not make it til Sunday (though he hopes for a friday arrival) and that no-one should count on his PA - or rather on using his PA speaks as onstage monitors, as I believe that Trinity has a 'real' PA? We're really hoping to be able to hear ourselves onstage without using headphones, which put a nasty layer of disconnect between us and the audience. We're saving up for our own monitors, but if I buy them now, the mortgage slips and my wife starts divorce proceedings...

Hi, Kalv,

Not sure if you got any replies to your Sunday August 5 posting, under "3. SOUND AND TECH,." To put a dent in your list, if you haven't otherwise assigned me, you could put me on:

SAT
3:30 Christ Celli/Kim
4:45 Christ PoJo Duo
9:00 Trinity Kline

SUN
1:45 Trinity Lauten
3:00 Trinity Combi 5
9:00 Unitarian Gann

Later,

Joseph: EconoLodge is a tad expensive for its quality, within walking distance. Capitol Plaza is right downtown, comparable, still trying to get a group discount. Grrrr.

John L: Spend another day at the office. We'll need you on Thursday.

Samuel: If you don't mind being guard dog, David is asking Trinity tomorrow about staying in a room there. It has lots of rooms, if they're not unhappy about a pair of residents!

ALL USING PIANO AT BETHANY: The piano is finally confirmed. Kawai is contributing use & setup of their new high-end 7-foot Shigeru grand.

By John Levin on Tuesday, August 14, 2001 - 08:53 pm:

Hi,

Question about set up days. I am planning on coming up on Wednesday to help with preparation, and be there Thursday and Friday. Ill Winder Eric Boyer will be with me to help out too. We're booked into the Comfort...

Deadlines have slipped a little bit at work. While I have my priorities straight (i.e. the festival comes before work!!) I just wanted to make sure that I will be put to hard work as soon as I arrive on Wednesday. Otherwise, I'd spend another day in the office to try to get things in order. I'd rather be in Montpelier, work deadlines be damned, but I just want to make sure there'll be stuff to do.

Thanks!!

By Matt on Tuesday, August 14, 2001 - 12:19 pm:

Shee, though Comfort Inn is basically "out of town" (vis Mapquest), it's less than 5 miles (vis Mapquest). I just booked with them, they extended the group rate back to Wednesday night for me (but don't tell them I said that, I want them to be nice to me while I'm there).
I understand there may be a shortage of rooms and I may get a roommate. 's okay.

By Samuel 'I don't get stage fright, I get stage terror' Claiborne on Tuesday, August 14, 2001 - 11:55 am:

Elaine, I have a funky but (barely) functional tripod. I also found the firewire cable. Now all I've got to do is find the Damn camera & AC adapter!

Dennis et al: I guess Jenn & I will book @ the Comfort Inn, though I'd be happy to play guard dog @ trinity.

As for stage monitors: Still waiting with baited breath to know if we'll be able to hear ourselves. Also, I don't specifically need vocal mics as I have one and Jenn usually likes to play Penn to my Teller, but if they're set up, we'll enjoy using them. Also, I will have both XLR & 1/4" connectors to the PA - hope one of those will work.

Hi Kalv,

What opportunities will there be to try out the piano in Bethany church before the Staturday 4:00 PM concert in Bethany Church? Also, what's the dress code for performers? Tie and Jacket, casual, anything goes, or what?

Robert d'Polansky

By Kalvos on Tuesday, August 14, 2001 - 10:40 am:

Mary Lou: Unitarian has a straight performance PA rental system with standard inputs. I think they're both XLR and 1/4-inch, but I'll double-check.

Doug: Bethany will be mixed by Bennett Shapiro. He has all your requests, including the clip-on mic request.

JB: Sorry, free housing has been such a struggle since we couldn't use Goddard. There are 62 places needed; I've just gotten 6 more as of this morning. Before you leave home, all will be arranged.

hi douglas!

i already requested a wireless clip-on mic for my piece, since i have the same issues as you do. it's a piece i think you don't know yet, for berimbau & elec's. i'm assuming this is already set up, since i mentioned this long ago, and no one said they're having problems... but anyway, let's see what are the news the have for us.

By Douglas Geers on Monday, August 13, 2001 - 11:22 pm:

Hello, all. I have a small equipment need, and wonder if anyone can help me... I have pieces on the first concert in Bethany Church on Saturday--12pm--(BTW, please come!!)--and I would *love* to borrow a clip-on violin mic from another participant if possible. I have 2 pieces for solo amplified/processed violin. I *could* use a stand mic, but my performer is very dramatic and tends to move away from the mic as she plays.

I also just read Mary Lou's note about mixer connections, and think she raised a good issue here. I would love to be 100% sure what the I/O situation will be for the mixer in Bethany, where my pieces will happen. I need to input a single mic (for the violin). Will the mixer expect XLR? 1/4"? I also want to split the signal to some effects & back (I will bring cheesy old Yamaha reverb unit). I assume effects sends will be possible via 1/4 aux outs or tape outs, but would love to be sure. Knowing the mixer makes/models would be enough; I could get the details myself.

Thanks much, and looking forward to meeting everyone in twelve days!

Doug Geers

By Mary Lou Newmark on Monday, August 13, 2001 - 01:58 pm:

I wanted to clarify my equipment needs for the Sunday noon concert at Unitarian. I am bringing my electric violin (no clip on mic needed) and effects processor. I plug the violin into the processor and the processor (stereo XLR) into the mixer of the PA system. I will need a small table for the processor. Also, I am assuming I can use the speaker monitors listed for Grant. Thanks!!!

Michael,

Spatialization folks are busy only for setup on Saturday morning (some equipment jockeying Friday evening). After that we'll have volunteers to change the material being played.

NOTE TO ALL: David and I have to hibernate for 48 hours to produce the radio PSAs and do the program book. Since it's the weekend, that's probably good for everyone else. I'll check in here for emergencies, and be back on duty after the book is delivered to the printer on Monday.

(Please continue conversations among yourselves, though.)

Botox is still used for good honest medicine today. PT says it functions as a local anaesthetic and wears off in about 3 months--it's used to manage temporary clonus. But hey, Zyklon, Botox, and Sarin sounds like a great name for a trio. Dibs. My last trio was called "Absinthe, Spirit of Green Dream", and it got premiered in Yerevan--I got the poster, in Armenian (they have a different alphabet), and when I look at it I have to remind myself that I'm not aphasic.

thanks for the camera, samuel. i still have a late stupid question... do you guys will have a tripod for the camera available down there? are you dear sam willing to bring one? please, let me know.
about helping for the concerts, i can't commit for the one i have my pieces in, because i'll be enough stressed... so i don't wanna mess up with other people's performances, but i'm planning to arrive on friday evening, so that i'll be around early saturday morning, (and that's something that almost never happens....) so i can probably help during the morning once i did the sound/light check of my pieces. i do think my pieces won't take that long for the sound check & set up, and once the concert is over i can help for the other ones. i'm sorry i got into this discussion list so late, so please let me know if it would help arriving earlier in the evening of friday.
also, does any one know how long does it take from nyc to montpelier by car?

Dr. Matt sez...

Hey, if there are developments that haven't been posted to the web site

Everything's been posted that's known. The grid and schedule of pieces is updated at least twice a day.

I've already heard from somebody who is waffling on showing up because he doesn't know who his pianist will be.

I don't know what that means. David (wheezle@maltedmedia.com) has final music decisions to make by Monday.

I still can't commit to plans to help record things or attend things because I can't tell when my music might be programmed.

Likewise. The last days of programming 38 events has been tricky, but we've got a 99% success rate. The other 1% has been troublesome. As I said, final schedules shortly.

I know that everyone is now very _very_ busy preparing, but to keep you busy after the fact and to help avoid the big August 27th downs I've been working to get the basis for a collective documentation of the Ought-One weekend up and running.
I welcome anyone who would like to try out the Ought-One Festival Discussion Board and Picture Postcard Collection http://freezope2.nipltd.com/oughtone before the festival and let me know if you find anything strange or not working as you think it might. The entries in it now are just for testing and I will remove everything to get a clean slate just before the festival at which point Dennis will hang it into the official Ought-One site too.
I will be coming to the festival with digicamera and ears open wide and hope that everyone else will add their grain of salt too to make this a vivid documentation of a great weekend!

Hey Dennis:'

Glad to see that you have not melted!!! Just to add to your list, we will need a CD player at Trinity (One of the CD's which I sent to you will be used for Part I of our piece Ritual in Four Parts). I also noticed that my name was not on the needy list for the Dream Room! I will need a CD player there as well (You also have the CD of that, Kurt & Jaco and Boll Weevil). Also, the piece that we are playing at Trinity is called Ritual in Four Parts!

I would also like to take this time to thank you & David for your INCREDIBLE support & perseverance for putting this festival together. Many mere mortals would have withered away without any obstacles, but yet you and David have continued under great amounts of stress and anxiety. Anyone else would have given the one finger salute after many of the unfair demands placed upon you but yet...we are all on the way in a few weeks. A big hug and kiss to you and David!!!

72 PRESS KITS? I should be so efficient...

I have a Firewire compatible video camera, but it's a consumer (maybe-almost-but-not-quite prosumer). Tiny little Hi-8 digital thing - think it's a JVC. Shall I bring it?

Also: Do I reserve a room or have y'all reserved 'em and if so, where am I crashing?

Also, please advise when you know, when we can appear @ Trinity for load-in on Friday eve., etc. (P.S. I REALLY don't mind sleeping on my own mattress in front of my gear @ Trinity if they don't...)

Peace - and trust me, it CAN'T be as disgusting up there as it is here - we topped 100 f'ing ozonated degrees here in NYC today - I'm a drooling Zombie.

Yes, Rorschach scheduling. Imagine actually having to create it. No ink blots in HTML. Ugh.

It's 45 minutes.

Tech requirements almost completely set out; report shortly. Major missing pieces are still an Alesis ADAT, a DA88, and a Firewire video camera.

99 degrees in this room, and still no break, no rain. I work very inefficiently under these conditions, but did manage to get 72 press packets out today, and received some incoming boxes of tech stuff from UPS. Temperature supposed to break tomorrow, good, but no rain through August 18 extended forecast.

Dennis

By Samuel 'Do I Sound Stressed?' Claiborne on Thursday, August 9, 2001 - 07:59 am:

I'm lookin' at that ol' schedule again and it still looks like 45 minutes of playing time to me - I guess the sched is some kind of rorschach test...

Also, I still am awaiting with baited breath your tech requirements list - i.e. do you need mics (I've got sm-57's), cables, camcorders, tripods, stil cameras, guitars, tweezers, hookahs, semi-automatic weapons, Sarin Cannisters, Acromeglia, an Ice Machine, a gross of slightly used pince-nez spectacles or a partial amputee octopus that has been bio-dynamically adapted to air breathing (and plays a mean Kat!).

By Samuel 'Oy Vey I Want To PLAY' Claiborne on Thursday, August 9, 2001 - 07:48 am:

I've some confusion over schedule. We'd originally (back in the days of the outdoor space) had a 45 min. set, according to the published schedule. The current schedule still looks that way to me, but J. Benzola thinks we've only got 30. I hope that's not the case! We can set up in 15 minutes (perhaps less), play our little hearts out, and then I was hoping that we could could move our stuff off to the side while Logos is setting up on their 15 minutes (organized chaos, I know), which would give us 45 minutes to PLAY.

I know that some people have more time slotted than others and that the schedules are tight all around, but 30 minutes is perhaps too tiny a slot for most of us to fully enjoy, considering the effort we are all making (i.e. we're all, to the best of my knowledge, not getting paid, spending our own cash on transportation and lodging, and many of us are donating our time and equipment to support the other performers). Is there some way that schedules can be adjusted @ this late date to produce a minimum performing time of 45 minutes?

Tanks

Samuel,

Okay, since Tom Heasley doesn't have room for a full PA is his vehicle, we'll work from here on that. I just emailed him that we almost canceled the sound guy for that space!

The jam session is still TBA.

96 degrees in this room. More later.

To Mork & Mindy: Bring yer own ear protectors.

Dennis

By Mork and Mindy on Tuesday, August 7, 2001 - 02:05 pm:

Oh... I forgot... Is there a local source for ear protectors? Some of us acoustic-only folks don't like the non-linear response of middle-ear bones being pulverized...

By Samuel Claiborne on Tuesday, August 7, 2001 - 01:01 pm:

Will contact Benzola & Heasley. I can do sound recording and other misc. tech work all day saturday @ Trinity after our gig (2:00 pm on). Would rather not do Benzola's performance because I'm likely to be preoccupied with my own and therefore not much use. What I'm doing on Sunday depends on whether my gear's secured adequately.

Our set up is fairly easy: stereo out from our mixer. But, we'd like to be able to have a wedge or two onstage for monitoring, and we're hoping that the Trinity PA sounds good (the acoustic part of us is really undesirable - i.e. the stuff we mic, we'd like loud enough that the processed version is what people predominantly hear. So, it's the quality of the PA and monitoring facilities that concern us. We are not, by any stretch of the imagination and acoustic band - we're an electronic band that uses (some) acoustic sources of sound generation.

Hmmm - a radar-controlled pyramid huh? Should I wear Sunscreen?

Also: I don't have a dat. I do have a digital camcorder (needs AC, inhales batteries) and I've got really good still cameras (though they're loud SLR's). To bring or not to bring?

Hope the 'jam session' is at trinity so benzola and I don't get hernias...

Doc Matt: I recall the backlight squeal. My D3 did that, too. Plz to bring unit!

Michael: I'll bring my stand, which I think is a QuickLok, or get one from our local supply ("Play It Again Sam", just one block from the Fest sites). Remind me before you leave.

My set up is easy - 2 audio outs from the sampler (2 x 1/4" phone) to the house mixer. I will need a headphone mix that is very different from the program mix, but I've worked it out here, and we can start by reproducing my mixer settings. For the physical setup, I'll need a table or something for the powerbook and rack, and 2 music stands. BTW: I have already asked that a QuickLok Z stand be available for me (I'm flying in).

If I absolutely have to, I can bring a Sony TCD-D7 (records in 48k only) and my Core-Sound binaural head-mikes (I clip them onto my glasses), and I could try to help somebody document something. Remind me not to use the backlight on the display, it squeeks and the ADCs pick it up on the analog side...

Hey Dennis:

Electronic/Sample piano is fine!!! My question is will there be one there? If there is, AOK by me!!

JB

By Kalvos on Monday, August 6, 2001 - 10:12 am:

JB,

If you don't need an acoustic piano and can use an electronic one (since it appears in only the last section of your piece), perhaps you can save us a few hundred dollars in repairs on the old upright and likely get yourself a better sound.

Can you, Samuel Claiborne, and Tom Heasley get together on Trinity sound reinforcement ... especially you and Samuel, as your presentations are back-to-back.

EVERYBODY: Please take a minimalist approach to sound reinforcement. These spaces are small and resonant. You will not need (or have available) a bold array of speakers, mixers, etc. Think simple, please, in ways that doesn't include arena-style miking of acoustic instruments such as pianos, drum kits, reeds, etc.

Be sure to look at the performance list and grid so you know what's before and after, and what their presentations will include.

For example, Samuel, Logos follows you. They have a simple acoustic setup (1 or 2 vocal mics, and stereo computer output), but their physical setup (a radar-controlled tetrahedron) takes some stage space.

After that, the Combi Concert #4 includes Michael Manion's array of processors and a MalletKat, as well as a dance floor that gets rolled out for the end of that concert. Michael, if you're reading, you might also let Samuel and Tom Heasley know (via this board) how intense your prep is.

I'm hoping everyone will keep in mind that the focus is on the cross-style gathering of composers and performers, so that each of you will leave Ought-One not only having been performed during your sonic window, but also having worked with other artists in the preparation of their work as they have worked with you.

The meta-genre of Nonpop takes us all with it into a higher level of visibility if we can do this together!

Recording and Tech

Hi,
As one of the festival tech volunteers, please feel free to assign me as needed for tech setups...
It's been a while since I've recorded a concert, but I did it all the time in my grad school days. I am DAT and gear-less, but available if necessary.

Mary Lou,

The Sig-Os are welcome, of course! This entire production has been created by the composers with the support of those Sig-Os, so bring 'em on!

Hi! No needs, issues, anxieties, questions, panic...there, that Aught-a confuse y'all properly. Queezl is handling any tiny glitches in coordination for my pieces, very well, indeed.Just one more big push, now, and before ya know it, the elephant-baby will be out in the world for all to admire! You can have your collective nervous breakdown - or should that be post-partem depression? - on the 27th! Truly a world-class act, guys & gals! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!!!

By Mary Lou Newmark on Sunday, August 5, 2001 - 05:17 pm:

Do spouses (significant others) need tickets to the concerts? I am assuming that we composers don't need to purchase tickets to the concerts we are not involved in. Many kudos for all your hard work!

By Kalvos on Sunday, August 5, 2001 - 12:58 pm:

THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE WAS JUST SENT TO PARTICIPANTS

Hi all,

The Ought-One Festival of Nonpop is three weeks away.

The move from Goddard College to downtown Montpelier hit us pretty hard, but we've recovered and it actually has been to our advantage, allowing bigger audiences and easier access to facilities and services.

I was waiting to send this email until the last details were in, but some of you are anxious, so here it is. You'll get another email in a few days with more information.

1. HOUSING
A. Vermont College (up the hill in Montpelier, a short walk from the site) can replace some and perhaps all of the previous housing at Goddard, at the same cost. This is waiting for confirmation.
B. Other housing is at the Comfort Inn in Montpelier. If you reserve there, be sure to mention that it's for Ought-One. Like Vermont College, these are doubles, so someone else may end up with you! The cost is $45, but to keep it in line with our original projections, we'll rebate $10 out of fundraising. They will bill us and we will bill you! I recommend this location only if you have your own transportation; it's on the I-89 access road.
C. I am also trying to get discounts at the local Econo Lodge and Tavern Inn, both within walk of the Festival.
D. For those of you coordinating through Susan Bettmann, all should be set; she is conducting a workshop for the next two weeks.

2. VENUES
There are now five physical sites, all but one within three minutes' walk of each other, and in the very center of Montpelier. Some presentations have been adjusted, but most match the former Goddard sites. Be sure the check http://ought-one.com/ought1-events.html for both the presentation times and the time/location grid:
A. Bethany Church. The former Studio Z presentations are here. Also, a resonant side chapel will house the Dream Room.
B. Trinity Church. The former Outdoor Stage presentations are here.
C. Christ Church. The former Atrium presentations are here on Saturday.
D. Unitarian Church. The former Atrium presentations are here on Sunday.
E. Montpelier High School. The Vermont Youth Orchestra only performs here. It is about a mile from the other venues, directly down State Street.
F. City Center. This is the Festival store and Information Center, with some video presentations.
You can find directions on the website http://ought-one.com/ought1-drexions.html or by using MapQuest http://www.mapquest.com/ There's also a close-up view of the venue locations. (I'll be taking interior photographs next week.)

3. SOUND AND TECH
This is an important change, as we no longer have access to personnel and facilities at Goddard. A number of you have volunteered as technical help. We would like to take you up on that, especially with a time commitment.
A. Bethany Church. I believe we have this covered with an excellent sound engineer. He is resolving scheduling conflicts. I'll let everyone know in the next email.
B. Trinity Church, Saturday. Help needed for Benzola (12:00), Loons (1:00), Logos (2:00), Combi #4 (3:15), Griffith (7:30) and Kline (9:00).
C. Trinity Church, Sunday. Help needed for Fumarola (12:00), Lauten (1:45), Combi #5 (3:00), Heasley (7:15).
D. Christ Church, Saturday. Help needed for Ill Wind (12:00), Celli/Kim (3:30), PoJo Duo (4:45)
E. Unitarian Church, Sunday. Help need for Combi #3 (12:00), Anderson (1:15), Lowenstern (2:00), Mooke (3:15), Combi #6 (4:30), Beglarian (7:30), Gann (9:00).
F. Dream Room. Many of the artists are handling their own, but for those not present, additional help is welcome. Peggy Madden, who was coordinating this, is visiting family for the next ten days.
If you can help with one or more presentations, please get in touch on the discussion board http://maltedmedia.com/discus/ Emailing me will only cause a clogged switchboard.

4. RECORDING
We could use recording volunteers at all venues. If you have DAT or video equipment and would be willing to record a presentation or two, let me know.

5. PIANOS
The rental grand (several still being auditioned) will be in Bethany Church. There's a baby grand in the Unitarian Church, and it's pretty good. The presentations there don't officially use it, but it is available. There is only a 'church piano' at Trinity Church; if you plan to use it, please let me know so we can have it serviced.

6. VIRTUAL PRESENTATIONS
These are no longer happening. It only affects Michael Edgerton and Judy Dunaway now, so if you wish to send a special recording or video, we will present that at our Info Center in a constant set of loops.

7. FOOD
There are changes to this. No info yet, but we're working on having NECI host us in Montpelier. More in the next email, and announced on the discussion board.

8. SETUP AND SOUND CHECK
As mentioned earlier, the actual sound checks will be tight, on Saturday and Sunday mornings. For rehearsals, other spaces inside the churches will be available. (Bethany has Sunday services, so this space is off-limits Sunday morning.) The time between sets if 15 minutes, so be ready to run on stage and set up. Please don't go over your allotted program time.

9. ADDITIONS AND CANCELLATIONS
We've had two additions to the program (Tom Heasley in non-virtual space and a new indoor piece by Phil Kline) and three cancellations (Roddy Schrock has a not-to-be-missed premiere in Ostrava, we couldn't put together Brad Smith's piece for banjo and string quartet, and Patricia Goodson is recovering from tendonitis (get well soon!)). Again, check the specifics at http://ought-one.com/ought1-events.html for both the presentation times and the time/location grid. Those of you who have been in touch about your pieces know we're still struggling with two or three of the performances. Remember to check often with David Gunn wheezle@maltedmedia.com if you have any questions.

10. QUESTIONS
Please use the discussion board at http://maltedmedia.com/discus/ Notices first appear on the board, as well as requests from other composers. If you haven't heard from us (yes, we are swamped), head there.

11. QUESTIONS
David Gunn is handling live music questions (performers, etc.), and I'm handling bureaucratic and technical questions. So if you want to know about live music, ask David wheezle@maltedmedia.com If you want to know about specific scheduling/technical issues, contact me bathory@maltedmedia.com For general questions, please post them at http://maltedmedia.com/discus/

12. POSTER
On the Festival website is the final version of our poster. Download, print, email, forward, etc., to everyone! Click "Get the Poster!" The poster (the wide one) is coming back from the printer next week. If you want 11x17 shiny copies to post, let me know; we'll have a few extra. If you want souvenir copies, you can pick them up at the Festival.

13. NEWS RELEASES/PRESS
We will have a new news release Monday afternoon. Please download it, add info about yourself and your presentation, and send it to your local newspaper, radio, and TV stations and help get the word out about the Ought-One Festival. News releases are available for download in MSWord format at the Festival website, and you can add your own concert information to them. Click "News Releases" or find them here: http://ought-one.com/ought1-news.html
We've previously asked for PSAs. If you can send us 10-15 seconds, we'll include it in our PSAs going out to stations. If you'd like a PSA CD to use at with your local media, let me know.
If you have "inside" contact with any of the following, please put them in touch with me:
CNN World Beat; TV Guide Music News; Greenfield at Large; NPR; MTV; VH1. Enthusing any of the traditional media about nonpop is a herculean task. We've gotten a 'who cares' from the likes of Time, for example.

14. TICKETS AND MERCHANDISE
Our on-line shopping cart is in place on the Festival website for tickets, T-shirts, etc. Encourage your friends to get tickets early.
If you will be wanting T-shirts or sweatshirts, please tell me to reserve them. I have to put this order in tomorrow, and don't want to over- or under-order. (Right now I only have reservations for two!)
If you have stuff to sell, you can bring it to the Festival store. Please tell us how much, how many, etc., to make life easier. We'll sell everything as marked.
As bonuses for contributions (and available only for fundraising at the Festival store), we have three special CDs:
1. "D'un Monde Lointain", a short work on a 3-inch CD
2. "NonPop:NoBounds", a single CD of various presentations that have taken place on for for K&D.
3. "NonPop:NoBounds", a double CD of various presentations from K&D.
All these, as well as the tickets and passports, are found at http://ought-one.com/ought1-sales.html

15. DID I FORGET SOMETHING?
If so, please post the question to the discussion board at http://maltedmedia.com/discus/} This discussion board is VITAL to making sure everyone is informed and satisfied.

Thanks. Just three weeks!
Dennis
