Quick note:

This thread is getting pretty long, so I'm going to close it to new posts (tonight after the K&D show) and move over to a new Part 6.

It'll stay open so long as the 'add a message' box is visible.

By Kalvos on Saturday, August 4, 2001 - 11:08 am:

JB,

No 'good' piano at Trinity, just a church piano, which may be adequate.

Real pianos are only at Bethany (the rental grand; our local genius is auditioning them) and Unitarian (very good in-house baby grand, but only used for one event).

I know there is at least one 88-key electronic coming, from Greg Hall. He's scheduled for Sunday, though.

From memory, I can't recall any other full-size electronic pianos coming. David 'Damian' Gunn has a Proteus Orchestral keyboard with a very good piano setting, and that will be there.

Dennis

By jbenzola on Saturday, August 4, 2001 - 10:06 am:

Hey Dennis:

One final question: Will Trinity church have a piano or will there be a supplied piano/keyboard there?

JB

PS: This is only a final question for the morning hour!!!

By Kalvos on Saturday, August 4, 2001 - 09:51 am:

Samuel,

You and Tom Heasley both appear to have complementary equipment and ideas, and you will both be appearing in the Trinity space ... almost at the far ends of the Festival! (Saturday at 1:00 vs. Sunday at 7:15)

It would be very cool if you could discuss here how to make the Trinity space work easily for everyone with the minimum equipment jockeying. You and JB are already in touch.

I'm feeling a little less stressed today (1, it's morning; 2, this idea seems a good one; 3, we have a sound person for the Bethany space).

As you read this message, check the performance grid at http://ought-one.com/ought1-events.html

Only Logos is as equipmentally ambitious as you three. Their output should only be stereo from a computer, but they have a 'radar pyramid' to set up (I've seen it; not hard to do.)

Michael Manion is bringing his equipment (samplers and MalletKat); since one of the pieces is mine, I'll hang around for that.

The Griffith rendering of McGuire (who'll be there) and Kagel is straightforward, I hope. The McGuire original is 4 channels, but we might have to mix that; let's see what takes place here on this discussion group vis-a-vis the addition of two additional outputs.

Phil Kline is going to do a piece for 30 boomboxes, sound system, and video. It's late and won't bump anything after it, so there's physical boombox-moving time.

On Sunday, Fumarola is an electronic music demo (playback), and Lauten is playback and keyboard. In Combi #5, only Daniel Goode needs sound for playback of his thrush pieces.

Then you're off duty until Tom Heasley's piece in the evening, which is the last one in that space.

I've asked Tom to drop in here, and hope he does.

By Kalvos on Friday, August 3, 2001 - 09:03 pm:

JB,

Please give me until Monday. I'm waiting for a final number on rooms at Vermont College (just a stroll up the road). This may be the best way to go if they have enough places.

Since you have your own transportation, the Comfort Inn on the I-89 access road will take your reservation now of you want to. They bill us for the block, we bill you $35.

Dennis

By jbenzola on Friday, August 3, 2001 - 07:39 pm:

Hey Dennis:

Do we still have the option for rooms at the Comfort/Days Inn?? At what rate???

JB

By Kalvos on Friday, August 3, 2001 - 06:31 pm:

1. 3 minutes crawl, 2 minutes walk. They're across the street from each other.
2. I'll check with them about security. (There's actually room to sleep.)
4. Security. Right. Security.
5. I'll work on them monitors. I've got a good sound guy here who's helping out. He'll know where to locate them locally.
6. Easy to find. Follow directions to downtown Montpelier (http://ought-one.com/ought1-drexions.html). Go to town center, corner of State & Main, and go one block further on Main. Bethany's on your right, Trinity's on your right across the intersection, Unitarian's on the left across the intersection, and Christ is on State about 500 feet down on the left. (Maps to follow on the OO site.)
7. Corporate sponsorship is $1K, $5K. Corporate underwriting sponsorship is $10K. Notice on all publicity and PSAs, on the printed programs, permanent credit/banner on the website, credit in any subsequent recordings or demos, and in any Internet streams and radio broadcasts. (I have a large official PDF if you have a high-speed download.)

By Samuel Crazy Shmulka Claiborne on Friday, August 3, 2001 - 05:13 pm:

Whoopie - good news re: Sound Check. So:
1) How far apart are bethany & trinity (really wanted to benzolate).
2) Please find out about Trinity's security so I can sleep @ night. Definately an issue - if our gear's gone, we're permanently screwed and probably instantly defuncted... We'll sleep in the place next to our gear if they'll let us...
3) great that we only have to move gear to the side!
4) Would love to do FOH sound, sound tech support (cable rat), or videography or stills (I'll bring my leicas if you want good stills otherwise I'll leave 'em @ home) @ Trinity on the remainder of Sat, and perhaps anywhere on Sun as long as our gear can be secured adequately (do you sense a motif here re: security?
5) Please, oh please get us some monitors (Our speed-crazed cow will french your fry if ya do).
6) Will get there on Friday, so please let us know how to get to Trinity and @ what time you'd like us for a sound check...
7) What do corporate sponsorships cost and what does the corp (a small corp) get fer it vis a vis promo?

Glad it's still happening, the silence was deafening...

By Kalvos on Friday, August 3, 2001 - 04:47 pm:

Gosh, a week goes by with nary a message and then here we are!

Okay, folks, we're straight out here. As you can imagine, the move from Goddard really kicked us in the pants in terms of time and budget. But we're back in the saddle.

0. Schedule: There's a new grid up at http://ought-one.com/ought1-events.html
1. Housing: Vermont College (a stroll up the road) will have some housing. The exact number of rooms will be known Monday.
2. Poster: This is coming off the press Monday or Tuesday.
3. Equipment: Note these are not your usual stages (as you can now see from the schedule grid). You will not have to move equipment between sets, except off to the side.
4. Tech/Recording: I'll love to have composers be each others' sound people. We presently have four sound people lined up, but the more competence the better. Look for more specifics later (it's 94 degrees in this doggone room).
5. Sound Check: Friday night for those arriving then, and Saturday morning, as early as you want to start. There will be a lot of setup. Sunday morning is okay for Unitarian and also (I think) Trinity. There are services at Bethany, (but the first set is on the downstairs stage).
6. Spaces: I am taking pictures early next week to post on the website.
7. Monitoring: There was only one request for monitoring, but we can arrange that.
8. Security: These are churches, and well-locked. Bethany is quite secure. I don't know about Trinity, but I will check. If any of you think this will be an issue, let me know and I'll see what I can find out.
9. Peggy is off for 10 days, so any sound info has to come through me now.
10. Money is still behind. The first flurry of pledges has ended with the goal at 52%. I'm knocking on doors.

All for now. Any music questions go to David, wheezle@maltedmedia.com ... but I think everybody knows that by now.

Dennis

By jbenzola on Thursday, August 2, 2001 - 10:15 am:

Ditto the head Loon!

We are bringing in a literal music store worth of equipment for our set and security plus the setup/breakdown times are an issue. An issue for me is also getting to the Bohn/Benzola duet with instruments in hand. Our duet is scheduled direclty after our set. If I'm late, the other JB might sign off on a contract for my life or even borrow one of Damians chain saws and...oh it's just to painful to think about!

The "other" JB

By Samuel Claiborne on Thursday, August 2, 2001 - 09:42 am:

Getting Queasy: It's less than a month and I am getting a little queasy because I still have no idea what's going on logistically, and because all of my technical questions are in limbo.

I know, I know, I KNOW y'all are VERY busy, but soon we're going to need some clarity on issues like:

1) Where am I staying, when can I check in, what do I do with my equipment when I arrive Friday night?
2) Will every band have to clear its stuff at the end of its performance to backstage (in which case I forsee spending the rest of the day sitting there babysitting it) or can the gear just be moved to stage rear (still onstage) so that we can then go sit in the audience and enjoy the rest of the day (or, in my case, can I sit @ FOH and mix or record or film or troubleshoot the rest of the show - only if I KNOW my gear's secure!).
3) Will there be any kind of pre-set up, sound check or are we all going on 'cold' with no idea of acoustics, levels, the capabilities of the PA systems etc.
4) Will there be monitor wedges on stage (we have no amps or speakers, we only have a stereo mix out to the house board) and if there's no monitoring capability we have to play through phones, which bites.
5) What about Saturday night security? Where can I put my gear where it's really safe for the rest of the show?
6) Is there any time, place and venue envisioned for one or more improvisational free-for-alls, and if so, what are the logistics there....

And the list goes on and on.

I hate to be a pain, but right now, about all I know if that I'm driving from NYC to Montpelior on Friday - I don't know where to go, who to see, where to stay, where to put my gear etc. -- A little clarity re: logistics would be appreciated.

Thanks.

P.S. Peggy said she's just doing the 'dream room' and has no list of tech requirements yet. I guess I'll just bring everything that's not nailed down in hopes it can be of some use...

One more thing:

If any of you want to record a PSA for the Festival, you can include anything up to 20 seconds' worth:

Your name and something clever
"The Ought-One Festival of Nonpop"
Downtown Montpelier, Saturday and Sunday, August 25-26
Something else clever

Email kalvos@kalvos.org a 128K stereo mp3, or upload your PSA to ftp://maltedmedia.com/incoming/

We'll add the tag lines and some of your music to go with it.

By Kalvos on Wednesday, July 25, 2001 - 09:27 pm:

Hello all,

Sorry for the away time. Yesterday morning we had to put down my wife Stevie's beloved 27-year-old horse, and then we took a long drive into the hills. Wednesday is my usual time away from the home office to repair gizmos (a regular if small income for 15 years now). So now I'm back.

There will be a number of notices soon, and the news is wonderful. Our poster will also be ready shortly in final form.

The performing space re-assignments are almost done, and we actually have a little more space than before, and four separate buildings within a two-minute walk of each other. The only distant performance (relatively) will be the Vermont Youth Orchestra, 1/2 mile away.

Michael: We are going to arrange drivers. If you are coming by plane, please let us know flight and time. We'll try to collect as many folks as possible in one trip.

Joseph: If you have time, please tell me the titles now if you can, so we can add them to our "sales" site, which will be up until the Festival.

Everyone: If you have reserved room space, it will be either in the Days Inn and the Comfort Inn. We are reserving a block of rooms, and will have final info in a few days. For those who are paying their way on this, we'll let you know the exact amount.

One important question we'll be asking in the email: If you have tech/audio skills and would like to be the engineer or recording person for someone else's concert, that would be most welcome. We will match up your available time with needed time.

We will be preparing another news release and posting it on the Ought-One site. Please download this release (it's in MSWord6 .doc format), add your own information and send it to your local media.

Also, tickets and other Festival stuff is now available on the Ought-One site; please let everyone know, so we have an idea how many T-shirts and sweatshirts to have made up. We'll be adding a few additional items as well.

More to come.

Dennis

By Joseph Celli on Wednesday, July 25, 2001 - 05:20 pm:

Hello Dennis:
oodiscs will donate some CDs to the festival to sell in the festival store - keep the proceeds of whatever sells and return those that don't.
This is the best we can do right now.
Should I just bring them along or do you
need them in advance? Do you need names of discs
now?
be well,
Joseph Celli.

By Samuel Claiborne on Thursday, July 26, 2001 - 12:06 pm:

Hi. Sorry about the horse - that must have been traumatic. About 6 years ago I had to put down a 27 (!) year-old dog I'd had since age 8.

1) We can't outright donate discs, but we'd be happy to split the profits - only one title 'Stranger Than Truth', as many copies as you want - anything over $6.00 is yours...

2) I have tech skills and would be happy to engineer/record, especially in the same space we're performing in so I don't have to run around too much. I used to own a 24 track studio and I've done some live sound... and of course the Stranger Than Truth CD was recorded live on a pocket MiniDisc and mastered on my computer - so I know how to abuse and stretch cheezoid technology, which is a skill that I figure will be much in demand @ '01. Just don't ask me to roadie - my back will be fried enuf just loading in our stuff. I presume that we'll arrive on Friday, get settled in and have some kind of meeting to co-ordinate?

3) We will be sending you a new set list soon, with more detail (a la Benzola).

4) Sent Peggy an email, but I guess she's been too busy, so I'm still waiting on tech questions and what stuff I can bring up to help out.

Please give your wife my condolences.

By Michael Manion on Monday, July 23, 2001 - 03:56 pm:

I finally have my travel plans. How do I get from BTV to the festival, complete with rack cases?

By Samuel Claiborne on Wednesday, July 18, 2001 - 12:50 pm:

Hey, in your COPIOUS spare time, can we (loons) get into the composers and performers list on the ought-one site? Remember, we're in the Monastery, NOT the attic ;->

Just thought you might be bored....

We just got played on WNYC's New Sounds (listened to that show for 15 years and finally heard something I wrote!) - Trying to get the host, John Shaeffer psyched on coming up to ought-one. If he's not on your mailing list, he should be: newsounds@wnyc.org

Peace

By Kalvos on Wednesday, July 18, 2001 - 08:02 am:

Samuel,

The cow's good. Could teach our cows some things.

Any loons?

Okay, Peggy Madden (peggy@madtrax.com) is officially in charge of tech. She's on a slow dialup, so if you could get in touch with her directly (after Friday) with the list above, she'll match up what's needed as soon as I send her the complete list!

Many thanks,
Dennis

By Samuel Claiborne on Wednesday, July 18, 2001 - 05:48 am:

Errr, about the lodging, yeah, I meant ALMOST free. I think Jenn and I can swing $35 bucks apiece...

Errr - about the PCM-81 - I've sent it back to Lexicon because it won't do what I bought it to do (adequately emulate a true stereo PCM-70) - not happy with the sound at all - very sorry.

I do, however, still have some neat stuff to share for those that need it: PCM-70, Eventide H-3000, PCM-42, Switching matrix, Mics, Mackie 1604 VLZ Mixer and CABLES - jeez I got cables (a lot of them Monster cable too). I also have a Hafler Trans Nova P-3000 amp which I haven't used yet (but I bought it new) and don't need for this gig (and which weighs a ton, considering it's diminutive size) which I'll bring IF Y'ALL NEED IT. Am also planning to bring my Leica and (possibly) the video camera & tripod (assuming I can get AC to the camera - it inhales batteries).

Did I mention that we're towing a 100' yacht (complete with male, female and hermaphrodidic coke-ho's, plus a cow with a bad methedrine habit) up there as well for JB so don't sweat that one...

Chastened, contrite, and STILL PSYCHED.

By jbenzola on Tuesday, July 17, 2001 - 08:07 pm:

Hey Dennis:

I hope the fundraising includes the above mentioned drugs, alcohol, limo's, penthouse, etc but....I would also like to have a yacht as well. I do love the smell of salt water in the summer!

Anyway... I will get a list of CD's to you including my new release which we will be playing at the festival. Do you need bios and other info? When will you need the pieces for the dream room? Also...Also...Also........do you need to have the tape portion of our festival piece in advance?? Questions, questions, questions???

JB

PS: Still waiting for my Harrington photo...

By Kalvos on Tuesday, July 17, 2001 - 07:20 pm:

Re selling CDs at the Festival shop, yes, you certainly can do that. We'll be setting this up at a central location. Let me know a list of items, quantities, and prices.

This goes for everyone.

By the way, the Festival items are now available using a Paypal shopping cart:

By Kalvos on Tuesday, July 17, 2001 - 07:12 pm:

Samuel,

The lodging was never free. It was $25/person, and we have been fundraising for it for those who need it. That's part of the $14,740 total composer/performer expenses. (It's now $35/person in the new location, but that's the least of the costs of moving!).

PA, etc., will remain the same.

Dennis

By Samuel Claiborne on Tuesday, July 17, 2001 - 04:27 pm:

WOW - Cool - More folks! Hope we get a cool venue (remember we need a PA).

As for fund raising - I'm trying but all of my friends are poor, lazy, demented miscreants!

Will there still be free lodging?

Neat, I'm psyched.

By Kalvos on Monday, July 16, 2001 - 10:08 pm:

This email was just sent to all of you:

Hello all,

This is a quick message to inform you that due to serious problems with the Goddard College infrastructure, the Ought-One Festival is being moved to downtown Montpelier, Vermont.

The move to Montpelier, America's smallest state capital, places it closer to public transportation and services, provides better performance areas, and offers larger audiences. Schedules will remain almost exactly the same, but it will mean some adjustments in housing arrangements. You'll like Montpelier as much as any place in Vermont, and having the Festival in town also corresponds with the Salsa/Jazz festival concerts and other public events on the last vacation weekend of the summer. It will be a very festive time!

We are diving heavily into additional fundraising to accommodate these changes. We sent an email last week asking each of you to pick up the phone and call three possible sponsors. More than 35% of the needs are now covered, which is good.

More information, including photos of the new venues, will be posted over the next week, both on the Ought-One website and the discussion board.

I will now be catching up on unanswered emails!

Best to all,
Dennis

Joseph, Tom, Samuel, Dr. Matt, Nocci, etc.:

Questions will be answered in the next day or two ... all good news (except that no, Ligeti isn't expected, just his music).

We have reached 1/3 of our money goal, and that's excellent ... enough to keep the wolves away and give us a bit more time.

By Kalvos on Sunday, July 15, 2001 - 09:08 am:

Hi all,

Look for important announcements late tomorrow or Tuesday. The news is very good.

Sorry to be cryptic, but a few critical meetings happen tomorrow!

Dennis

By Samuel Claiborne on Thursday, July 12, 2001 - 11:13 am:

Sorry about the news. Too broke now to contribute, but will try to find others.

Technical question: We'll be handing off a stereo feed from our mixer to the PA - i.e. we won't be using any amps/speakers of our own. Will there be PA monitor speakers or wedges of any sort on the outdoor stage? If not, we'll probably have to perform with phones, which is a drag because it somewhat removes us from the audience... but we can do it if needs be.

Also: When can we arrive Friday? How will we find our lodgings on campus? When will we set up for sound check - friday - saturday? and If there is to be a get together on Friday Night, will you post the wheres, whens and wherefors when you know?

Thanks, thanks, thanks.

I hear the clash are going to regroup to do an ambient album called Protista.

Zappa is dead, and he smells funny - and god I miss him...

By Kalvos on Tuesday, July 10, 2001 - 10:47 am:

Hi folks,

I have some troubling news, and need your help.

Our major sponsor, who had given all indications of coming through with full O1 Festival sponsorship, has decided against it. It came as quite a shock, and I just learned about it 15 minutes ago.

I'll be in touch with the K&D board shortly for a consultation.

In the meantime, I would ask you to make 3 phone calls each to potential individual sponsors (amounts from $50 and up), and perhaps ask the responsive ones to call 3 others. If we can push this forward three times, we can pay for the Festival.

The web-savvy can use PayPal:
https://secure.paypal.x.com/xclick/business=kalvos%40kalvos.org&return=http%3A//kalvos.org/

Others can send a check or money order payable to VCME/K&D to me at 176 Cox Brook, Northfield VT 05663 USA.

I'll be emailing shortly; I've already sent out an appeal to the K&D mailing list.

The O1 Fest will go on ... but right now I need to reduce the pain!

Thanks,
Dennis

About the protista:

You glean a this, I'll glean a that. Together we'll glean a lot.

Is it true that they all come from Euglene, Oregon?

By Samuel Claiborne on Friday, July 6, 2001 - 11:01 am:

On Improvisation:

Jennifer and I would love to join in an improvised event that has NO SCORE, NO DISCUSSION and NO AGENDA - I.E. Just plug in and go... I know this can result in mere cacaphony, but if the players show sensitivity and restraint, may also yield something new and exciting. However, we'll take what we can get.

I can't read music, and though Jennifer can, she agrees that it's not what we want vis a vis improv - we want to get on the trapeze without a net.

We'll participate in any event that'll have us, bearing in mind that we can't/won't read.

We are: Me: Guitar, viola, percussion, vocals, whistles and homemade instruments, played both processed and unprocessed. Jennifer: Synth-o-rama

I would say that in general, we are more timbreally oriented than melodically or rhythmically, though that is a vast oversimplification.

By Samuel Claiborne on Friday, July 6, 2001 - 10:54 am:

Funny you mention Euglena, and protista in general - they're the inspriation for my work, being little thingies that can't be classified and hence have a new classification made for them that really should be Latin for 'non of the above' - I think the protists are the 'non pop' of living organic matter, very apropo.

P.S. Will also bring Brownies and Crucifixes, as well as a spare Danelectro....

IS There GYORGY LIGETI to the Vermont Festival?

By Samuel Claiborne on Thursday, July 5, 2001 - 10:03 am:

I'm bringing a mixer (Mackie 1604 VLZ), some mics (one 441, some 57's), stands etc. and will share as long as they come back to me in one piece! Also will have a rack full of signal processors, but I don't imagine you'll need them. But, they're there: Sansamp, Eventide H-3000, PCM-42, PCM-70, PCM-81 and a Sound Sculpture Switchblade programmable matrix which might come in handy as a kind of swiss-army-knife mixer (16X16 matrix with gain on inputs and outputs). If someone needs a 'verb or something...

Will also try to bring my digital camcorder and a tripod.

Ditto on the wild animals and the four food groups: Tobacco, Grease, Caffeine, Sugar, prefer blue ringed octopi over women - less deadly.

Hi Dennis,
Just perused the schedule of concerts and I see that you have the length of my piano trio at 7 minutes. It actually is 12 minutes and "Regalos"(for orchestra) is 5 1/2 minutes.

This looks like a fantastic festival and I'm looking forward to participating and meeting all of you!!

Up and away.

Hey Dennis:

I am bringing more equipment than Musician.Com!! This caravan will include a 4 channel mixer and perhaps two microphones. Per your request above, do we just need these are do you need to borrow these for others?? Also, I was planning on bringing my portable DAT and Digital Camcorder to record my set. If you need these to record/document others, it will cost K&D the usual supply of drugs, alcohol, tobacco, limo's, woman, wild and domestic animals, a five floor suite, and of course an autograph from Jeff Harrington. Let me know, I know the Harrington autographs are going fast!!!!

The other JB and not the JB that you think it might be...JB

THIS MESSAGE WAS JUST SENT OUT TO EVERYONE

Hello all,

We are less than two months from the Ought-One Festival. Please read this information.

1. INFO: Latest public info is at http://ought-one.com/ You can find a nearly final schedule, space photos, maps, directions, etc. This site is updated daily.

2. QUESTIONS: Please use the discussion board at http://maltedmedia.com/discus/ Notices first appear on the board, as well as requests from other composers. If you haven't heard from us (yes, we are swamped), head there.

3. QUESTIONS: There is a division of labor (=division of insanity). David Gunn is handling live music questions (performers, etc.), and I'm handling bureaucratic and technical questions. So if you want to know about live music, ask David . If you want to know about specific scheduling/technical issues, contact me . For *general* questions, please post them at http://maltedmedia.com/discus/

4. EQUIPMENT: If you can bring equipment (especially microphones, small mixers, cables, camcorders, etc.), or would be willing to record/document part of the Festival, please contact me or Peggy Madden .

5. HOUSING: Goddard housing is arranged for those who requested it. If you wanted housing with local people and have *not* yet contacted our volunteer guest housing coordinator, please do it immediately. She is Susan Bettmann .

6. HELP: We need "people" help. Some of you will be helping with engineering, sound, etc. We also need people willing to provide guidance and security in the library, where Studio Z, the Atrium, and the Dream Room are found. The library has just been renovated, and we are anxious to keep it in good shape. If you want to commit some time to this, please contact me .

7. VIRTUAL PERFORMANCES: We're having real difficulty with our ISP and bandwidth, trying to figure out how to get the download from our virtual performers, without it being interrupted by demand from on-line listeners. If any of you have a server where we can send an upload stream for our two Festival days, please let me know at or post suggestions to http://maltedmedia.com/discus/

8. NEW MUSIC MONTH: Vermont's Governor Howard Dean has proclaimed August to be "New Music Month" at our request. You can find a copy of the proclamation for download at the Ought-One Festival website. Click "Get the Proclamation!"

9. POSTER: Also on the Festival website is our poster. Download, print, email, forward, etc., to everyone! Click "Get the Poster!"

10. NEWS RELEASES: We have news releases. Please send them to your local newspaper and radio stations and help get the word out about the Ought-One Festival. News releases are available for download in MSWord format at the Festival website, and you can add your own concert information to them. Click "News Releases"

11. TICKETS: Our on-line shopping cart will be in place on the Festival website in a few days for tickets, t-shirts, etc. Encourage your friends to get tickets early. Tickets will be very limited by space. In a few days, click "Tickets and Other Festival Goods"

12. MONEY: Always needed. Let us know.

If you have any other questions, please post them at http://maltedmedia.com/discus/

Many thanks,
Dennis
